Author: admin  //  Category: Gardening

Ornamental grasses have long been thought of as just added elegance to yards and gardens. However, with the art of container gardening becoming more and more popular, ornamental grasses are being added to containers to help enhance patios, terraces, and entry ways. Believe it or not, when it comes to edible plants so many are perfect for containers that the challenge will be to choose the right one to help strengthen a planter garden.

Because of their low maintenance, ornamental grasses are perfect for containers. These hardy plants require little water, and they need to be fed twice a month with a liquid fertilizer such as Miracle Gro. These hardy plants also can stand conditions drier than most container plants so the maintenance is minimal. They also provide movement and sound that flowers cannot offer.

The Pieces Of Pre-made Complete Skateboards

Author: admin  //  Category: Roller Blades

Skateboards are what most people think of when they hear the term skateboarding equipment. Well, some people might think of skateboard pads, but mostly I think it is a skateboard people think of. To be exact, what people think of is complete skateboards.

complete skateboards consist of 3 main parts. The skateboard deck, the trucks, and the wheels. The skateboard deck is the obvious part. It is the main part of the skateboard that you stand on. The truck is the medal part your wheels hook on to. Its important to get the type that best fits your style of skateboarding. The last part of a complete skateboard is the wheels. I am pretty sure everybody knows what the wheels are. You can pick different types of decks, trucks, and wheels depending on what type of skating you will be doing.

After cool graphics, the main dimension of a skateboard deck is its width. You have to make sure your skateboard looks cool. If you like to skate in half pipes or pools or at a skate park your deck should be about 8.25″ to about 8.5″ wide. The wider the deck the more stable it is. For technical and street riding you would need about a 7.5″ to 8″wide decks. This well help you do flip tricks, grinds, and other stuff like that a bit easier.

Trucks are the next part of a complete skateboard and they come in three different main sizes. Low, medium, and high. Low trucks give you more stability and quicker flip tricks. They also go well with smaller wheels. Higher trucks allow you to use bigger wheels for a little bit more speed, you can roll a little farther to, and more bigger wheels make it easier to go over rougher roads. Medium trucks are between low trucks and high trucks. Most skaters choose low trucks for street skating. You can also specialize the bushings that are between the deck and the trucks. Soft rubber bushings are better for sharper turns while harder rubber is more stable and harder to turn. Most skaters just use a medium hardness.

The last part of the skateboard you need to select is the wheels. As with all parts of your skateboard, appearance is a big factor. You need to make sure your wheels look good with the rest of the skateboard. The other 2 factors are the hardness of the wheel and the diameter of the wheel. Larger wheels allow you to go faster. If you are doing a lot of skateboarding on ramps, you will want a larger wheel to get more speed so you can get more air. If you are going to be doing more tricks on the ground, you will probably want smaller wheels because they will be lighter and allow you to flip your skateboard easier. If you are going to do a lot of all terrain type skating, you may want to choose a softer wheel to give you a smoother ride. As with all of the elements of a complete skateboard, many skaters will be well served by getting a medium sized wheel of average hardness.

Now that we have gone over all the individual elements of a complete skateboard, you will be happy to know, most of the time you can just buy complete skateboards already put together with middle of the road equipment and be off and skating without ever having to choose the components. This is recommended for new skaters. After you start skating you can go out and replace components to fit the style of skating you do the most of. Once you are advanced and building your dream board, you will know exactly what you want and it won’t be hard to pick out all the components.

When you are ready to buy your skateboarding equipment check out one of many resources on the internet like www.SkateboardPlanet.net where you can save a bunch of money on big name complete skateboards and other equipment.

Raised Bed Vegetable Gardening For Better Vegetables: Essential Gardening Guidance

Author: admin  //  Category: Gardening

Any one who has constructed raised beds for vegetables will give you an enthusiastic thumbs up if you’re wondering whether to try this method yourself. Raised beds provide an efficient use of space and the frames are easy to build and maintain.

Raised bed vegetable gardening has many advantages over ordinary garden beds in that the soil has better drainage and will warm up earlier in the spring, providing for an earlier harvest.
The raised bed garden is so much easier to maintain. The higher bed means less stooping and bending when weeding or caring for plants and you never have to step in the beds which stops the soil from compacting. Because the soil is cultivated deeper, raised bed vegetable gardening offers an ideal environment for root crops such as carrots and beets and, with the looser soil, crop yields are usually greater. Plus the raised beds simply look neater.

Economical Construction
Raised beds are not necessarily expensive to build because the frames can be built from rough cut or even used lumber. The boards can be painted or stained with a non toxic preservative.
The sides of your raised bed vegetable garden need to be a minimum six inches deep and about four to six feet wide, or just wide enough for you to reach the center from either side without having to step into the bed. The walls of the bed will have to be anchored to stop them from falling over and this is best done by driving stakes at four to six feet intervals on the outside of the frame.
Once the frame is constructed it is ready to be filled with soil, but not just any soil. The beds should contain a mixture of sand, soil and organic compost material. Using just regular garden soil will cause the beds to pack down and make drainage difficult. Your plants will thrive in the looser soil and it makes an ideal environment for earthworms as well.

A Frameless Option
If you don’t have the option of raised beds, because of a limited budget or lack of materials you can still try your hand at raised bed vegetable gardening following a method the Chinese have used for centuries. It’s really more of a mound than a raised bed but will give you many of the same benefits. Mix equal amounts of compost and sand into the soil to build up mounded beds. These frameless beds may need a little more attention to stop them from eroding or becoming too dry.

Which ever method you opt for, raised vegetable gardening will make the chores involved much easier. Raised beds are a great way for those with limited mobility to continue to enjoy a favorite pastime. Your garden can grow as your needs grow, simply by adding new beds and the beds look attractive all year long because clean up in the garden is minimal.

And of course, every gardener deserves a place to relax in the backyard. Why not built a pergola. It’s the perfct place to relax with family and friends or for some well earned solitude.

You can do the hard work yourself or hire a handyman to build it for you. It’s certainly a lot cheaper than buying a kit. In fact you could save hundreds of dollars.

Winter Fishing Tips And Jigs For Crappie

Author: admin  //  Category: Kayaking

Crappie fishing in winter can be a daunting challenge but cheer up there is help. Super crappie fishing really begins after the ice is long gone in the spring but its cold now and we are hungry for that clean white morsel of meat.

So you ask how to catch the little guys and how to get that pan fish in your pan and when ice fishing there are only a few key items to consider: bait, location and ice.

(Keep in mind, you can use things like the evening secret fishing weapon under the ice. Just drill two holes. Fish down one and drop the device down the other one. You can see a video here: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1459072/evening_secret_bait_fish_catching/ )

When it is cold the fish are slower and their hunting patterns change. Do not forget this… EVER. We are not much different, we like our ice cream in the summer and chili in winter. Keep this in mind when fishing in any water temperature. Use fast baits in warmer waters and slower baits in colder waters. When the waters are cooler and sometimes frozen everything below the surface moves slower so when choosing jigs pick ones that move slower, this means lighter weight too as it will not sink so fast.

Many of the plastic jigs will move smoothly through the water, this is a great advantage in the spring months, but not so much in the colder waters. Feathered jigs once wet will also smooth out and move quickly through the water but an artificial feather sometimes will fall slower than most plastics. Do not forget either that plastics will get stiffer when they get colder and this is part of the reason that smaller jigs work well in the colder waters.

When the water temperatures drop below 50 degrees crappie will seek shelter in almost any structure they can find, so choose a bait that will be found in shelter they are hiding in. Most waters will get a little clearer when they ice over. When this happens use smaller jigs. I would also suggest using really light colors on the jig like yellows and whites.

Some of the smaller plastics seem to work well for me I like to use smaller grubs or tubes. When I know the water is clear I start with white or very light colors and work towards darker colors. But as the visibility of the water changes go with a color that is only slightly lighter. Remember most bait fish or insects are really trying to blend in to the background so you want to stand out just a little bit more.

The Horrors Of Hail: Essential Gardening For Beginners Help

Author: admin  //  Category: Gardening

One of the most hazardous things that can happen to your plants is extreme weather. Many a garden has been damaged overnight because of this phenomenon. And seemingly, there is nothing we can do to prevent it. Naturally, if weather didn’t exist at all then we wouldn’t have those lovely sunny days that are beneficial to the growth of our plants. But then again, we wouldn’t have the tragic hailstorms that tear down everything we’ve worked so hard to grow.

When rain begins to fall, normally the first reaction in a gardener is purejoy. After all, this means you don’t have to worry about going out and watering it manually. The natural rain fall can’t be anything but good forall your thirsty plants, can it? Well, once that same gardener begins to see the gorgeous rain drops turn into small globules of ice, generally a complete emotional breakdown is in order. I know this from experience, because when I was a blooming gardener I had my garden completely demolished by about 10 minutes of severe hail.

When I first learned my lesson on the damage hail can do, I quickly came up with a method of coping. I began to keep large clay pots within 10 feet of my garden, so that at any sign of hail I could run outside and have the plants sheltered in a matter of seconds. This saved me from being forced to watch my plants be ripped to pieces on multiple occasions. I’ve never dealt with hail more than an inch in diameter, but I’m guessing that if there had been any baseball sized chunks then those pots would have been quickly demolished.

However, as the number of fragile plants in my garden grew, it became slightly impractical to have a pot for each plant, and run outside to place each one before significant damage had already occurred. After much thought, I ended up building a horizontal, retractable screen mechanism made out of a strong but flexible wire mesh. At any sign of rain I could pull the screen out over my entire garden and have instant protection. Not only did it let the rain through, but the collected hail provided a steady drip of water for as much as a day afterwards. This project cost me several hundred dollars, and more blood, sweat, and tears than can be measured with earth dollars. Therefore I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.

If it’s too late for you, and you’ve recently lost your precious plants to those wicked balls of ice, then you’re probably looking for some way to help the plants recover. Unfortunately there aren’t many choices for you. The best thing you can do is give them the tender care they deserve, and attempt to nurse them back to health over a long period of time. The several weeks after being severely damaged by hail are vital to whether the plant survives or not. If you expect more rain or wind, you should keep the plant covered. In this brittle stage, even raindrops or a strong breeze could create more damage.

So if you live in an area that experiences frequent hail, you should definitely have some emergency plan for protecting your plants. Sitting by and watching them be torn to shreds should never be an option!

Your Tutorial About Gardening on Small Places of Land

Author: admin  //  Category: Gardening

The original square foot unit is 4×4ft, 16 sq ft, which can supply one person with vegetables and salads.

When I made mine I made raised beds and made them 36 “wide and since there were 6 of us I had to make two 3 ft. wide by 24 ft. long with a 20” path between them. Now if I had to do it over again I would make them 24” wide and do the math for the length. At this writing we are down to only two of us and one of them is not a gardener.

When I put the first square foot gardens in we removed the lawn and tilled the ground which is mostly red clay where we live so we had to modify that with top soil that we had hauled in and organic matter.

Then I read that about putting down old carpet between the beds. We did and I wish we did not because it looks like heck then and still does not because it was not biodegradable in my life time.

I suggest plain mulch. Even today’s cardboards and especially newspapers have a lot of chemicals in them and on them. We could get wood chip mulch for free from out local lumber mill at that time.

If you are starting from scratch you will need a good layer of top soil and organic compost and we put about 10-12 inches in our raised beds. Here again we used the “double digging” method for our beds.

At this point our beds became pretty high and with the sloping down of the sides we were reducing our growing area, so we made wooden sides for our beds and that allowed us to put up trellises or growing hoops where needed. It also allowed us to make “mini” green houses across the tops with plastic for early seed planting and hardening of our plants as they emerged from the seeds.

Do not use pressure treated lumber. We were able to get some good boards from our local Amish lumber mill. Plus because we were also building a house and stuff was being delivered on pallets we were able to salvage the wood from the pallets.

We had a good crop that summer. However, in the following spring we noticed our raised beds had settled and we had to add another 5-6 inches of dirt to them. We also used seaweed emulsion as an additive.

The years have flown by and it is now almost 9 years later. We no longer need all those beds as I said there are just 2 of us now.

The container method is good for the urban gardener who wants to do square foot gardening.
