What if I told you that 50% of Soccer Coaching Drills should focus on enhancing the trapping skills of your players? You will not be convinced with the statement. But interestingly, researchers say that trapping, besides dribbling and passing is mainly responsible for consistently winning matches.
When a player catches the ball and is able to maintain its possession with him, it’s trapping. These are soccer exercises that permit the use of chest, thighs and feet while doing so.
Players must be familiar with the job of trapping the ball. If the players don’t know how to trap the ball, the primary skill, they would fail to have control over the game. Below mentioned methods can be used to teach trapping skills to the players.
Use your feet: As a coach, you must teach the basic lesson of using the feet to maneuver the ball. Particularly in kids soccer drills, teach the kids to use inside of their foot. The biggest reason for this is that the inside area of the foot is broad and is most helpful in tackling the ball.
Coaching Fun Kids Soccer Drills
During soccer coaching drills, the high ranking and senior players should be educated on the use of foot, its crown, and instep of the foot plus the whole foot. Train your players to adopt the strategy to apply ankle or shin to catch hold of the ball when it is jumping a lot.
Thigh Movement: To control high-speed and bouncy ball, thigh can be used very efficiently. Players should be taught to face of the ball, use one thigh to catch the ball and the other to stand on the ground. Most importantly, practice dropping your knee once it connects with the ball for the ball to drop down and stay with you rather than getting away.
This exercise of dropping the knee needs to be done repetitively so that the players master the art of first stopping the ball using the knee and then drop it so that the ball trickles down the feet.
Use the Chest: Similar to the role of a thigh, the chest also plays an important part in trapping the ball that is high up in the air. Players should be positioned in front of the ball to face it but using the energy through their chest to stop it. This will have the effect of breaking the ball’s speed and tumbling it down immediately.
But keep in mind that in soccer training drills, young players are given only a few modest lessons on this technique. It is natural for them to use their hands in dealing with the ball while attempting to use their chest. This practice could lead to a problem by kids getting comfortable using their hands to deal with the ball.
